    Notes:

    Birth:
1891 Census says he was born in Camden Town. At the time of the census he was 8 months old and living with Charles and his wife Emma and their children William (12), Ellen (10) and Rosina (8) at 19 Exeter Street. In the late 1930s Exeter Street was renamed Ashbridge Street and is in Marylebone, 70 yards from Little Carlisle Street where he lived 28 years later in 1919. I believe his mother was Clara who I have not found in the 1891 census. I believe Charles and Emma may have moved away temporarily when unmarried Clara became pregnant and that's why Walter is shown as being born in Camden Town, as Charles and Emma's nephew in the 1891 census and as their son in a later census. My father Frank, recalls that his father in law was very close to and affectionate to 'aunt Clara' and would visit her every Sunday.

    • Departure: Apr 1882, National Childrens Home, Hamilton, Canada; Outline record if Library and Archives Canada shows Albert Shardelow (do they all change the A to E when they cross the atlantic?), Male 15 years old (he would actually have been 16), crossing to Canada as a Home Child. Strangely Edward George Shardalow also seems to have crossed in April as a Home Child (he's listed as Edd with 2nd "d" raised) - did they go together? The National Childrens Home charity had taken over the Milton Industrial School in Gravesend in 1875 - Albert would have been sent there after his mother died in Jan 1877. In 1873 the charity set up an emigration scheme and the home in Hamilton. The charity had been set up by Methodist Minister Thomas Bowman Stephenson - I think his name is on the passenger list as the Reverend accompanying the children across the atlantic.
